Is Taiwan a Country? |
Over the past few years Taiwan has had some trouble gaining it's own independence. It has passed five of the eight criteria to become a country, but it doesn't fully have power over it's own thanks to China claiming control since 1949. It also no longer has external recognition after the People's Republic of China took over the place of the Republic of China in the UN although once having it's place prior to January 1, 1979. Most countries also associate Taiwan as being with China since most significant nations recognize China as one whole which tends to be a problem that Taiwan faces constantly. They have tried to remove itself from the PRC by major vote, however ended the votes as the PRC government stated that they would invade Taiwan and force the people to stop the movement. In March 2004, China had a law passed granting the ability to invade Taiwan if ever they chose to become independent. The death of the Taiwanese people for the sake of independence is a gamble for all who live in the country of Taiwan.
Will they risk having missiles shot at them destroying their precious island? Will a civil war occur? Will Taiwan have enough allies to support them?
...Only time will tell.
